Music theater, drama, dance, children’s and young people’s theater: the Linz Theater of the Province with the stage of the big house and the chamber theater has acquired an excellent reputation with its broad ranging repertoire of opera, operetta, musicals and dance. The big house opened over 200 years ago, the chamber theater directly adjacent to it in the Promenade opened in 1957. A new building for the Theater of the Province is currently being in construction. A theater venue of the future will be opened at Blumau, where forms of theater using new media and technologies will also have a fixed place.
(World) premieres of contemporary authors, but also unusual interpretations of classic works are the trademark of Theater Phönix. Opened in 1989, the theater venue in the Wiener Strasse is one of the most important independent mid-sized theaters in Upper Austria. In 2006 the Theater Phönix was awarded the stage arts prize of the Federal Province of Upper Austria for ongoing work with Upper Austrian authors and the founding of an in-house publishing company.
The children’s culture center Kuddelmuddel and the Children’s Theater are ambitious program-makers for the youngest visitors all the way to young adults. The u/:hof, the children’s and young people’s theater of the Theater of the Province, is dedicated to year-round passionate and moving theater for children and young people. And the Eisenhand venue of the Theater of the Province will be remodeled by autumn 2007 according to designs by architecture students from the Linz Art University into a young club theater with around 120 seats. Festivals: European Theater for a young audience in Linz and Upper Austria is offered every year by the theater festival “SCHÄXPIR”. During the school theater week “Zündstoff” selected productions from Upper Austrian schools are on the program at the Theater of the Province, Theater Phönix and Ars Electronica Center.
Along with the finest pop, rock, cabaret, literature and theater presentations, once a year the Posthof at the Linz Harbor becomes a universe of international contemporary dance. Meanwhile a permanent feature of the Austrian dance festival scene, international top ensembles perform during the “Dance Days” at Posthof in March and April, partly with Austrian premieres.
