It was anchored in the Cultural Development Plan of the City of Linz in 2000: the new building of the new museum of modern art on the Danube between the Nibelungen Bridge and Brucknerhaus. Since the official opening in May 2003, Linz is a radiant landmark richer: the Lentos Art Museum.
The successful and sophisticated composition for the Lentos Art Museum is from the Zurich architects Jürg Weber and Josef Hofer: a 130 meter long building with a glass encasement that is illuminated at night is excellently integrated into the landscape on the bank of the Danube. And not only that – the interior spatial conception is also well planned. On three floors with a total area of about 8000 square meters the Lentos Art Museum provides space for internationally acclaimed exhibitions, a library on the lower floor, a museum shop and a restaurant. In 2003 Lentos was designated “Building of the Year” by the Federal Province of Upper Austria. In the same year the Swiss architects were awarded the “Building Contractors' Award” of the Central Association of Austrian Architects.
The Collection of the Lentos Art Museum comprises nearly 1,500 works from the areas of painting, sculpture and object art, roughly 100,000 works on paper and 1,200 examples of artistic photography. Objects from the Collection, modern art and the most current trends in contemporary art are presented in alternating exhibitions. The Lentos Art Museum is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm, Thursdays from 10 am to 9 pm.
