Secrets surrounding the Schlossberg

The story of the Schlossberg (castle mount) is indelibly linked to the first documented mention of Linz in the year 799. Even then, there was a castle perched high above the Danube, the remains of which can still be seen today in the spacious Schlosspark.

Following a short stroll through the old town, one literally dives deep into the castle mount. Equipped with helmet and lamp, one can explore a maze of tunnels, which were used as air raid shelters, and have a temperature of 10 degrees Celcius throughout the year. Dripstones, escape staircases and brick lined niches form a backdrop to the echo of footsteps in the semi-darkness.

Once back outside, the path leads to the Martinskirche (Church of St. Martin), where architectural traces from the Roman period await discovery. The walk continues across a park with a splendid view of the Danube and the Pöstlingberg and through the Friedrichstor, a gate bearing the coat-of-arms and inscription of Emperor Friedrich III (AEIOU). This fascinating tour can then draw to a relaxing close on the terrace of the Schloss Café.

Our tip! The tour can be supplemented with a visit to the Linz Schlossmuseum with its collection of art and cultural artefacts and exhibitions.
