Theater / Dance
Raise the curtain for the enchanting protagonists and musicians on stage in Linz: from the large hall to small stages, from baroque opera to contemporary Austrian authors, from whirling dance virtuosos to sophisticated theatre for children and young people.
Four sections set the tone
Music Theatre, Drama, Dance, Children's and Young People's Theatre: the Linzer Landestheater (Linz State Theatre), which comprises the large hall and the Kammerspiele (Chamber Theatre), has acquired an excellent reputation with its broad ranging repertoire of opera, operetta, musicals and dance. The large hall opened over 200 years ago, the Kammerspiele on the Promenade directly adjacent to it in 1957.
(World) premieres of contemporary authors, but also unusual interpretations of classic works are the trademark of Theater Phönix. Opened in 1989, the theatre venue on Wiener Strasse is one of the most important independent mid-sized theatres in Upper Austria. In 2006, the Phönix was awarded the stage arts prize of the Federal Province of Upper Austria for the on-going work with regional authors and the founding of an in-house publishing company.

Actually, everything began in 1949 when a handful of actors could not get an acting job and decided to help themselves. On the initiative of Ernst Ernsthoff, they founded a 'factory stage' for the staff of the United Austrian Iron and Steelworks. During its 55-year-long existence, 112 plays were performed at the Kellertheater (Cellar Theatre), eighteen of which were world premieres and five Austrian premieres. On top of that, they present at least one fairytale per-formance for children every year.
